God in the Pledge of Allegiance

The phrase "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance has been debated for a long time. The Pledge was written in 1892, but the phrase "under God" was added in 1954 during the Cold War. The United States government added these words to show that America was different from the Soviet Union, which did not believe in God. Some people believe that this addition is important because it reflects America's religious values. They feel that by including "under God," the country shows respect for the faith that many Americans follow. However others feel that it violates the first amendment: people are free to practice their own religion and the Establishment Clause: the government cannot establish a national religion. For some people, the phrase "under God" is a reminder of America’s Christian roots branching from England. Many Christians believe that the phrase acknowledges the role of God in the nation's history and is what led to its success. The...

Hurricane Helene

On Friday after the power went out, making our whole neighborhood suddenly dark, my parents decided to go to their  work to get internet. Having nothing better to do other than read but it was too dark I decided to listen to music and  an audiobook, while looking out of the window with my only source of light being a small flashlight. However before  my father, left he boiled water and put it In a thermos so I could make ramen later,      Because I had nothing to do I used the hall to practice volleyball. At times there was enough sunlight to read by a  window or do a diamond dots sticky puzzle. When I got bored I would see if anything had happened outside by  going into my room and looking at the window which overlooked our front yard. Since I didn’t want to waste the  battery from the flashlight I tried to stay near a window as a source of light as much as possible. For dinner we went  to Red bowl and I got s...

My Research

During school on Wednesday we were testing but after i finished I started doodling and decide to make 1000 tally marks. My goal was to just make 1000 tally marks but i kept going and ended up making 1020 tally marks. I decided to document the time and mistakes and lines it took. It took me about 11 minutes  and I found that i didn't make many mistakes; It took 8 lines to finish. After i did the tally marks, I decided to write out the numbers 1 through 204 i picked 204 because 204 is the number of groups of tally marks. it was faster than tallies and it took 5 minutes to finish. I used 11 lines because the letters were bigger and wrote 519 characters. i made more mistakes during this one because numbers change and tallies are just the same line over and over again. My final step was to draw 204 circles. I did this because i was bored and wanted to see how long it would take. Each circle was a different shape that i repeated 204 times and had the least mistakes. this is what i did on...

My expirence at the Whitewater Center Rock Ride Paddle camp

Image
The Whitewater camp called Rock, Ride, Paddle is a one week long camp in which you do various activities throughout the week. Some of the activities include whitewater kayaking, rock climbing, and mountain biking. There are other camps like Adventure camp but they are not focused on certain activities. Below are the activities we did and how each of them were. Whitewater Kayaking Whitewater kayaking is when you ride rapids and learn how to control a kayak. The first thing you learn is  how to put on the gear and after that you learn how to wet exit if you flip over. After that you get in the  water and practice. We were supposed to kayak for around 2 hrs per day but the first day that we were  supposed to kayak they were testing the water and didn't want people in the water. So on the second day  we spent 4 hours kayaking to make up for the time we missed. On the second day we first swam some of  the rapids to understand how they flowed. Then we rode the ...

Why we shouldn't give participation trophies

The tradition of giving participation trophies started in 1922 when a basketball team in Ohio gave its players the trophies. They give kids participation trophies to make them feel good about playing the sport. The trophies are usually awarded to the players that don't score high. However, participation trophies are not only awarded to kids they are also given to older age groups and for other activities not just Basketball. Then, an author for a newspaper named Victor Martinez started talking about participation trophies being bad for kids, in 1998.  Unlike many kids that like receiving participation awards because it makes them feel special I feel that they produced an effect that makes kids feel overconfident and when they fall it is worse.  I play a lot of sports and when I get a trophy when my team or myself get a trophy for doing nothing, it feels unfair. To me getting a participation trophy is like getting a participati...
