My expirence at the Whitewater Center Rock Ride Paddle camp
The Whitewater camp called Rock, Ride, Paddle is a one week long camp in which you do various activities throughout the week. Some of the activities include whitewater kayaking, rock climbing, and mountain biking. There are other camps like Adventure camp but they are not focused on certain activities. Below are the activities we did and how each of them were.
Whitewater Kayaking
Whitewater kayaking is when you ride rapids and learn how to control a kayak. The first thing you learn is
how to put on the gear and after that you learn how to wet exit if you flip over. After that you get in the
water and practice. We were supposed to kayak for around 2 hrs per day but the first day that we were
supposed to kayak they were testing the water and didn't want people in the water. So on the second day
we spent 4 hours kayaking to make up for the time we missed. On the second day we first swam some of
the rapids to understand how they flowed. Then we rode the rapids on the instructional channel. We
learned how to get across rapids and ride them. On the third day we rode rapids and practiced.
Mountain Biking
We went mountain biking twice on different trails. When we started we got fitted for a bike and got a
helmet then we waited to start. On the first day we biked Dog Leg but halfway through the trail we found
a tree that was blocking it and we just turned around. The second time we rode Jackrabbit, it is a short
trail but there are a few hairpin turns and part of it is downhill and immediate turns on a ledge so it is
hard not to run into a tree or the person in front of you.
Adventure Rafting
There are two channels to raft, the one that my group chose to raft was the adventure channel. We got our
guide and when we got in the raft we practiced steering together. We rode the channel 3 times then we
got out and went to lunch. In Adventure camp you go rafting twice but this camp you only go rafting
once.
Deep Water Solo
Deep water solo is a rock wall that is above a deep pool so when you are done you fall into the pool and
swim out. We were originally supposed to go once but we went twice because our kayak session was
moved. The first time we went we went for less time and I got further up because we didn't do anything
before it. The second time we did it we did it after climbing and flatwater kayaking so everyone's hands
including mine were sensitive so we didn't stay for as long.
100 Foot Drop
In Hawk Island there is a sixty foot and hundred foot drop. The sixty foot drop is rarely open; the only
time it is open is when it is too windy to use the hundred foot drop. When you go on the hundred foot
drop you get strapped in. They tell you to turn around slowly and walk towards a red dot on the floor.
Then on the count of three you step off the ledge. You fall most of the way down and then the machine
catches you and lowers you down slowly.
Climbing Wall and Bouldering
We went climbing, bouldering, and used the top ropes three times during the week. The first time we
went climbing i mainly bouldered which is climbing twice your height without a rope. The second time
I used the auto belays, which is a machine that lowers you. The third time we went I did top rope which
is when a person holds you up instead of a machine.
Ridge Ropes Courses
The ridge ropes courses are courses where you are hooked in above the ground and do obstacle courses
above the ground. I did the advanced and the beginner intermediate. The advanced is the one that is
highest above the ground and is supposed to be the hardest but in my opinion the advanced intermediate
is harder. However the advanced one is the longest and highest. I did the beginner intermediate because
it is shorter and we had just enough time to finish it.
These are all the activities that I did at the Whitewater Center: https://center.whitewater.org/
